When it comes to gambling in Nepal or any other jurisdiction, it's essential to be aware of the relevant legal regulations and consideration so that one can gamble responsibly and within the bounds of the law. Here are ten legal things you should know about gambling in Nepal:

  1. Prohibition: It is a prohibited act all over Nepal to gamble one’s own movable or immovable property in expectation of some valuable return directly by oneself or through others.
  2. Accomplice: The one responsible for arranging the gambling venue or letting the property under their ownership or possession be used by others for gambling purposes is also criminally liable.
  3. Confiscation: All the tools and materials used in and for gambling are subject to confiscation by the authorities. This does not include the building, room or any other place itself and vehicles where the gambling has taken place.
  4. Punishment: Those engaged in gambling may face imprisonment of up to three months or a fine up to thirty thousand rupees. Second-time offenders are charged with a fine up to fifty thousand rupees or an imprisonment term of one year. Repeat offenders face additional imprisonment up to three months and fine not exceeding ten thousand rupees for every next instance of gambling offense.
  5. Exception: Playful activities involving petty cash and property that people engage in during public fest, carnivals, festivities, exhibitions and conferences as a part of the culture which has also been permitted by Nepal Government are not considered gambling.
  6. Permission: Persons looking to partake in gambling business through establishment of casinos shall do so only after getting approval from the concerned departments of Nepal government as per the existing law.
  7. Duty to Inform: It is the duty of anyone who witnesses gambling activity or knows that such an activity is going to take place to inform the concerned authorities about the same.
  8. Betting: Although there is a slight difference between gambling and betting, both are prohibited activities under the same provision of Nepal law. Anyone engaged in betting may face imprisonment of up to a year and a fine up to ten thousand rupees along with confiscation of the amount used in making the bet.
